Hautefort Chateau, North Dordogne

The magnificent Château de Hautefort is one of the most impressive historic sites in the Dordogne and a highlight for guests staying in our holiday rentals in Dordogne. Ideally located in the northern part of the region, Hautefort is perfectly placed for visitors seeking a blend of history, culture, and beautiful countryside—making it a fantastic area for a holiday home rental in Dordogne.

The château is open daily from April to October, with additional opening on weekends and bank holidays in March and November, allowing visitors staying in nearby Dordogne holiday homes plenty of opportunity to explore this remarkable landmark. Throughout the year, Château de Hautefort also hosts special public events, making each visit unique and memorable.

Set within stunning landscaped grounds, the château is surrounded by formal French gardens that are widely regarded as some of the finest in the Dordogne. A visit to the gardens is not to be missed, offering sweeping views over the surrounding countryside and a peaceful setting just moments from many self-catering holiday homes in Dordogne.

Historically, the château is believed to stand on the site of an earlier fortified refuge dating back to the Hundred Years’ War, when defensive strongholds were essential across South-West France. As peace gradually returned to the region, the castle’s military role became redundant, and work began to transform it into a more comfortable and elegant residence.

It was during the 17th century that the Château de Hautefort took on much of the architectural character we see today. In the 20th century, the château underwent an extraordinary restoration led by the Baron and Baroness de Bastard, who dedicated over 30 years from 1929 to returning it to its former glory. Tragically, shortly after the restoration was completed, a devastating fire in 1968 caused severe damage and destroyed much of the interior.

Despite this setback, the Baroness de Bastard—following the death of her husband—began an ambitious restoration for a second time, ensuring the château’s survival for future generations. Today, visitors can once again enjoy the elegance of this historic home and imagine the grand social gatherings and events that once took place within its walls.

For guests staying in holiday homes near Hautefort, the château makes a wonderful day out and perfectly illustrates why this area is such a desirable location for holiday rentals in Dordogne. With its rich history, beautiful landscapes, and proximity to other Dordogne attractions, Hautefort is an ideal base for an unforgettable stay in South-West France.
